I. Planning Your Blackrock Summit Family Adventure: Tips from a Parent Who’s Been There

2. Choosing the Right Time

If you’re looking for a truly magical experience, then Blackrock Summit is the place for you! The weather is cooler, and the foliage is at its peak during the fall, so this is the perfect time to visit. This season is absolutely perfect for enjoying some truly spectacular views and comfortable hiking conditions. We really hope you have the best time ever! Just make sure to check the local weather forecast before your trip so you can make sure you have the best possible experience.

3. Hiking Trails

The most common trail to Blackrock Summit is a relatively short out-and-back hike. It’s called the Blackrock Summit Trail or the Blackrock Trail. The trailhead is at the Blackrock parking area on Skyline Drive (milepost 84.4).

The elevation gain is minimal at only about 170 feet, with a mostly gradual incline. This trail is suitable for all skill levels, from easy to moderate. The rocky surface may be a little uneven in places, but it’s a great choice for anyone looking for a challenging hike.

4. Camping Options

If you plan to camp, consider staying at Big Meadow Campground in Shenandoah National Park. This campground is known for its beautiful scenery and well-maintained facilities. It’s advisable to book your campsite in advance, especially during peak seasons.

5. Packing Essentials

Make sure to pack appropriately for your adventure. Essential items include:

  1. Comfortable hiking shoes.
  2. Weather-appropriate clothing.
  3. Sunscreen and hats.
  4. A map and compass or GPS device.
  5. Binoculars for wildlife viewing.
  6. A camera to capture the beautiful scenery.

II. Why Blackrock Summit ROCKS for Kids

The Talus Slope

Okay, so you HAVE to hear about the Talus Slope at Blackrock Summit! Seriously, it’s like nature built a playground just for kids. When we were there, my little ones went absolutely WILD climbing on all the rocks. I mean, we were a little nervous at first – some of those boulders are HUGE! – but it was amazing to see them figuring out their footing and just exploring. It’s definitely a workout for them, and honestly, it’s a great way to tire them out! Plus, you can sneak in a little geology lesson about how all those rocks got there – win-win!

A Taste of the Appalachian Trail

And get this, Blackrock Summit is actually on the Appalachian Trail! I know, the Appalachian Trail! It’s kind of a big deal, right? We figured it’d be a super cool way to introduce the kids to the AT without, you know, dragging them on a 10-mile trek. It’s like a “taste test” of the AT, and let me tell you, it worked! They’re already asking when we can go back and hike “more of the long trail.”

Ease of Hike

The best part? The hike itself is super easy. We’re talking a 1.1-mile loop, mostly flat. I even saw a family with a three-year-old who walked the whole thing! When we went, I was carrying the baby in a carrier, and my four-year-old basically skipped the whole way. It’s the perfect length to keep them engaged without them getting too tired and cranky. You know how that goes!

Stunning Views

But the real payoff is the view from the summit. It’s seriously breathtaking! We took a ton of pictures, but honestly, they don’t even do it justice. You get this panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley, and it’s just…wow. The kids were even impressed, doesn’t always happen!

Optional Rock Scramble

Now, if your kids are little adventurers like mine, there’s this awesome rock scramble at the top. It’s totally optional, but my older one loved it. It’s a little more challenging, with some actual climbing involved, so we kept a close eye on him, but he felt like such a big kid conquering those rocks! If your crew isn’t into that, no worries, you can totally skip it.

Backcountry Camping

Oh, and here’s a little insider tip: we actually met a family on the trail who had camped overnight near the summit! They said it was amazing! I’m definitely filing that away for when the kids are a little older and we’re feeling braver. Apparently, you can even camp right on the summit if you’re hiking the AT. How cool is that? One dad told us he and his kids had done it, and it was a memory they’d never forget.

III. Keep It Safe and Fun: Essential Tips

✔️ Safety First, Fun Always:
Ensure everyone in your group is aware of the potential risks, such as steep cliffs and uneven terrain. Carry a first aid kit, plenty of water, and snacks. Also, make sure to inform someone about your plans and expected return time.

✔️ Shenandoah Weather:
The park’s elevation means that temperatures can be cooler than in nearby areas, and weather conditions can change rapidly. In March, you might experience anything from mild, sunny days to cold, rainy ones. Always check the weather forecast before your trip and pack layers, including waterproof clothing.

✔️ Respecting Wildlife:
Educate children on the importance of respecting wildlife. Explain that feeding animals can harm them and disrupt their natural behaviours. Observing animals from a distance ensures their safety and yours.

✔️ Leave No Trace in Practice:
Show kids practical ways to implement Leave No Trace principles. This could involve setting up a camp responsibly, using biodegradable products, and ensuring that all waste is packed out. Hands-on participation in these activities can make the lessons more memorable.

IV. Beyond Blackrock Summit: More Shenandoah Adventures

Oh, you all know Skyline Drive in Shenandoah, don’t you? It’s got gorgeous views, and it’s really easy to get to, but sometimes it feels like everyone else is there, too! We’ve been going to Shenandoah for years, and I’m here to tell you that there’s so much more to the park than just the drive! If you’re like us and craving something a little less crowded and a little more adventurous, you’ve got to hear me out, my friend!

Waterfalls and Streams

Dark Hollow Falls is such a pretty spot, but it’s usually absolutely PACKED! A few years ago, we made the wonderful discovery of Whiteoak Canyon and Cedar Run, and they’ve since become our absolute favourite spots! You do have to hike a little further to get to them! Because they’re less accessible, you usually have more space to yourselves, which is just one of the many reasons we love them so much! We packed a lovely picnic lunch and spent the whole afternoon having a wonderful time splashing around.

Historic Sites

Shenandoah is so much more than just pretty scenery! It’s got a fascinating past, too. On one of our hikes, we came across some old settler cemeteries and ruins of homes. It was such a lovely surprise! It sparked a whole conversation with the kids about who lived here before us. We also had the chance to take a tour of Rapidan Camp, which was President Hoover’s summer retreat, and it was truly incredible!
